Surviving and Thriving on Your Summer Wedding Day: Top 5 Tips for Couples

Summer weddings have a certain kind of magic. Long golden evenings. Warm air. Sunlight that seems to linger just a little longer. The kind of glow that makes everything feel a little more romantic.

But as beautiful as summer weddings can be, the heat can also add an extra layer of stress if you aren’t prepared.

The good news? You don’t have to spend your wedding day worrying about sweat, discomfort, or feeling drained.

With a little intention and planning, you can stay comfortable, stay present, and actually enjoy every moment of the day you’ve spent so much time dreaming about.

Here are 5 things to keep in mind for your summer wedding:

1. Plan your timeline around the heat (and the light)

Your wedding timeline impacts more than just where you are and when—it shapes how your entire day feels.

If possible, avoid long stretches of outdoor portraits during the hottest part of the afternoon. Standing in direct sun for an extended period can quickly become exhausting, especially in formal attire.

Instead, consider:

  • Planning portraits in shaded areas

  • Taking advantage of indoor spaces during peak heat

  • Scheduling romantic couple portraits closer to golden hour

As a photographer, golden hour is one of my favorite parts of a summer wedding—not only because the light is beautiful, but because it often gives couples a chance to step away from the busyness of the day and simply be together. The best photos often happen when you’re able to slow down and enjoy the moment.

2. Take care of yourself before you feel like you need to

Your wedding day will be filled with excitement, emotions, and a lot of movement. Add summer heat into the mix, and it’s easy to become tired without realizing it.

Start preparing before the wedding day:

  • Drink plenty of water the day before and throughout your wedding

  • Eat a nourishing meal while getting ready

  • Keep water nearby during portraits and throughout the day

  • Take a few moments to sit and recharge

You don’t have to be “on” every second.

Some of the most meaningful moments happen when you allow yourself to pause.

3. Choose comfort without sacrificing your vision

Your wedding attire is an important part of your day—but comfort matters too.

You want to feel confident walking, dancing, hugging your favorite people, and soaking in every moment—not distracted by an outfit that becomes uncomfortable after a few hours.

Consider:

  • Lightweight, breathable fabrics

  • Comfortable shoes or a backup pair

  • Breathable materials for suits and formalwear

  • Hair and makeup choices that can withstand heat and humidity

The goal isn’t to avoid every imperfect detail—it’s to create a day where you feel like yourself.

4. Prepare for the unexpected

Summer weather can be unpredictable. Even the most carefully planned outdoor wedding may bring unexpected heat, humidity, or a quick change in conditions.

A simple wedding day survival kit can make a huge difference.

Consider having:

  • Handheld fans

  • Cooling towels

  • Blotting papers

  • Extra deodorant

  • Sunscreen

  • Makeup touch-up items

  • Water bottles

  • Comfortable shoes

Ask your planner, maid of honor, or someone you trust to keep these nearby so you don’t have to think about them.

Small preparations create more freedom to enjoy the moments that matter.

5. Let go of perfection and stay present

Your hair might move.Your makeup might need a touch-up. You might get a little sweaty.

And that’s okay.

Your wedding photos are not meant to document a perfectly controlled day. They’re meant to preserve the emotions, relationships, and memories that made your day yours.

Some of the most beautiful summer wedding images aren’t the ones where everything looks untouched.

They’re the ones where you’re laughing harder than expected, holding hands a little tighter, and soaking in the people who came to celebrate with you.

The warmth, the movement, the little imperfections—that’s what makes your story real.

And years from now, that’s what you’ll remember.

Your summer wedding doesn’t have to be something you simply endure. With thoughtful planning, the right people around you, and permission to embrace the moment, it can become everything you hoped it would be—warm, joyful, and full of memories you’ll never want to forget.
