I grew up in the wide, open spaces of Idaho, where life felt slow, grounded, and simple. Now I call Northern Virginia home—a much fuller, faster-paced season of life—and somehow, I’ve come to love both.

My greatest joy is being a wife and a mom to our 2 adorable energizer bunnies. It’s in these roles that I’ve learned to appreciate the little things. The quiet moments, the chaos (which we have a lot of these days), and everything in between.

My faith in Jesus is at the center of it all. It shapes how I love, how I see people, and the way I move through life—with gratitude, intention, and a deep appreciation for what matters most.

Hey, hey! I’m Alyssa.

BEHIND THE NAME

Once I became a mom, I found myself. Now, that's usually the opposite of what you would hear a new parent say. But for me, it wasn't until I had my son that I looked in the mirror and decided to create and become someone that I truly loved.

I let go of things that no longer served me, became a single mom (though have since found my Prince Charming), poured my heart into my friends and family, and I picked up hobbies that lit my soul on fire, photography being one. My dear little boy was my saving grace and directed my life to a whole new purpose, so it was only right that my passion project, and now business, be dedicated to him...

Miles.

My logo is a compass, and it holds more meaning to me than just a visual mark—it tells a story that is deeply personal. At its core, it’s a play on the word “Miles,” which is my son’s name. He is the reason behind so much of who I am today, and naming my brand in a way that reflects him felt like the most natural and meaningful choice. Every time you see my logo, it’s a quiet nod to him and the journey that began when I became his mom.

The idea of a compass also speaks to direction—how we navigate life, love, and all the moments in between. Photography, to me, is about capturing where you are right now in your story, while honoring everything that brought you there. Just like a compass points you forward, these moments become markers along the way—reminders of where you’ve been and what matters most.

But even deeper than that, my compass represents my faith. Jesus Christ is my true north—the one I look to for guidance, purpose, and direction in my life. When things feel uncertain or overwhelming, He is what grounds me and leads me forward. That belief shapes not only who I am as a person, but how I show up for the people I photograph—with intention, care, and a desire to see the good and the meaningful in every story.

So this little compass you see—it’s more than a logo. It’s my son. It’s my story. It’s my faith. And it’s a reminder that even through the unexpected turns in life, we’re always being guided somewhere meaningful.

SO WHY WEDDINGS?

Great question! Let me share a story that shaped my passion for wedding photography. A horror story really...

Flashback to my own wedding: I had hired a photographer whose work I absolutely loved, and I was excited about the beautiful moments she would capture. Imagine my shock and disappointment when, on the Big Day, a complete stranger showed up instead of her.

The entire experience was a trainwreck. Family members and guests were confused due to the lack of direction and communication from the photographer. Key moments and memories went uncaptured, and the few that were documented were done so poorly and were mediocre & lackluster to say the least.

This experience, though disappointing, became a pivotal moment for my photography business. I ended my wedding day with a determination to ensure no other bride and groom would suffer the way we did.

Your wedding day is irreplaceable, and so are your memories. The only tangible things you leave your special day with, besides your new spouse, are the images. That is a huge deal to me. The passion I already had for photography is now stronger than ever.

My slogan for Smiles For Miles Photos is "Turning Visions Into Visuals." This is my commitment to you: Whatever you envision for your day, I will bring it to life. You have my word!
